The Rectory 10 Question With Writer/Director Jonathan Chance

The Rectory 10 Question With Writer/Director Jonathan Chance

We had the opportunity to catch up with Jonathan Chance the writer/director of of the new film in pre production The Rectory based on the true story of the most haunted house in England. See the original first look here The Rectory First Look

Epic Horror(EH)-For those out there that don't know, who was Harry Price and why is important that he was holding the keys to Borley Rectory at the time your film takes place?

Jonathan Chance(JC)-He was publicly one of the very first Paranormal Investigators. He was a pioneer, inventor and former magician. Some years before the beginning of our story he discovered Borley Rectory after family members living there claimed it was haunted and then he experienced first-hand that it indeed was. It became one of his most prolific cases coining it “the most haunted house in England.” Whatever he saw there obsessed him for years that by 1937 he had one mission; to rent The Rectory for a year and run an experiment with willing candidates to prove the existence of the ghosts.

EH- Could you give us a little background on Borley Rectory itself., is it still standing, will you be filming any part of your project there?

JC- The story of Borley Rectory goes back as far as the 1600’s further even its thought. But let’s start at the 1600’s. There was once a sisterly Nun who was to elope with a neighbouring priest but they
were caught and murdered for their sins. In 1862, The Rectory was then built right on that very spot by Henry Bull for his growing family, around 1900 the daughters saw the apparition of the ghostly Nun for the first time. To whom that stayed there it increased in activity over the years in a series of terrifying events including sightings, levitation, bumps in the night you name it and more.

The Rectory itself no longer stands it was burned down due to strange circumstances in the 1940’s. Though the site and church opposite is still very much haunted people and certainly even Price’s successor Peter Underwood still claim.

We look to film for authenticity and that area would definitely be perfect we will film in Essex and England for sure. Nothing beats that creepy, gloomy woodland!

EH-Is it easier being both writer and director because you know what the writers vision was when he/you created it, or does that put added pressure on you?

JC-It puts more pressure on me because I see it a certain way. I can see what this can become, but in all honestly as I was writing it I was constantly visualising how it will look. That’s the film maker part of me. When you’re a writer / director I think you’re seeing the movie in your head and as an editor as well I can see it completed. It definitely isn’t a boring read so the film should be an exciting, and most of all scary!

EH-Growing up close to where the events take place, when did you know you would like to make this project?

JC-From an early age the fascination took hold with watching hammer horror videos, reading EC comics so this very living, breathing ghost story nearby it seemed natural now I look back to have had a vivid imagination. After doing art in college and then with my brother filmmaking it seemed was a natural step and this for me was personal – a story that has to be told. It’s too big not to. In 2003, I
wrote a short script called ‘The Ruin’ a modern day based very closely around it but my plan of action from about 2006-07 was always — “if one of my films take-off The Rectory is the project I want to bring to the big screen.” Now as an independent film its great –there’s less interference and it has a better chance of staying gritty, real to the subject and of course chilling!

EH-Could you tell us about the crowdfunding project your using to get "The Rectory" made, and where people can go that would like to help?

JC-Of course! We're currently on indiegogo trying to raise funds for pre-production. We have a great producer, an industry special effects artist and some extraordinary cast and crew set up and if you go over to our link and see what we have so far you'll see we're on our way, we just need some help to finish pre and push to production. I think this is quite possibly one of the most important paranormal cases of all time – and this is going to be big and we want people to be a part this and come on this journey with us. There are some really cool perks set up:
If you can't donate but are interested in this film there are always other ways to help! Firstly tweeting about our film (and including our twitter handle) really helps – and RT’s help too. The key is really spreading it everywhere so it’s up for all to see on the indiegogo boards. Sharing the indiegogo link on Facebook, Google and other social media sites all really helps. If we see your input you can bet we'll thank you and RT and share them of course – we appreciate all the support we can get to make this happen.

EH-All your cast so far has worked both sides of the camera, as a director does that make it easier for you or a little rough thinking there might be 6 other producers glancing over your shoulder?

JC-Haha! Now you make me think… no, I think they have faith in me or they wouldn’t be working on this feature film. There’s respect for the Director and his vision. I was taken aback by the compliments
for the script from them, so I think they can see what I’m projecting; they have visualized its potential. Having talented directors, producers on set (in their own right) is actually really good to have - other points of view and all coming from guerrilla filmmaking we’re all driving toward one goal; to find the most effective way of getting this the best and most realistic it can be. But we’re all on the same page - the Director needs his actors, his Producer and every one on set to play their role as best they can.

EH-If readers want to follow the progress of the film are you guys on any social media sites?

JC-Twitter @RECTORYFILM

YouTube: (Original Pitch)
Mostly Twitter and Facebook you'll definitely find us to reach out to.

EH-Could you give us a little background on you and your production team?

JC-I’m Jonathan Chance a British writer, director based in Orange County, CA. I make horror and sci-fi films and I've been lucky enough to have been awarded a few and nominated for my screenplays too. Maybe you caught one on the festival scene, but this one I plan for everyone to see in theatres, it’s a dream of mine. Calvin Vanderbeek is an award winning producer; he definitely sticks his nose out for independent film, and means it. He’s smart and I respect he sees what I’m trying to make and happy to have him fighting in my corner. Michele Mulkey was the first person on board this film and is another huge fighting force for independent film, the independent filmmaker and projects she believes in - very excited and happy to have her on this. Derek Sims is a wonderful DP and talented Director in his own right – I look forward to joining forces with him to create this monster. Some of the best actors we have on board are also some of the nicest, most generous people I've ever met - so it will be a pleasure to work with these award winning ensemble. Crispian Belfrage as Harry Price Jason Vail as Henry Tennison
David Hogan as Mark Kerr-Pearce Angela DiMarco as Stella Cranshaw I can't wait to soon bring more talented people on board to join them!

EH-When all is said and done what do you as the writer want people to walk away from this film knowing?

JC-That there was once this house full of mystery and these iconic fascinating people that were intertwined with it. To be taken on a journey that is all at once frightening, unique, and unusual. These people were certainly way ahead of their time – and because of these intrepid fellows we’ve enjoyed many a horror film and ghost story or two that could very well could have all thrived from this very source – the house which is back to claim it’s title for being most haunted possibly in the world and rightfully where it belongs on the big screen for all to see.

EH-Last Question, Zak Bagans or Harry Price?

JC-Harry Price! The one and only – I think his approach was a little more subtle. Actions speak louder than words – or shouting.

And there you have it horror fans 10 question with Jonathan Chance about the new film The Rectory. It sounds like this film is just what we need in todays horror genre that puts CGI and gore over story. A good old fashioned ghost story. That uses Story Over Gory

Delivery: The Beast Within (2013)

Delivery: The Beast Within (2013)

Not every child is a blessing........

And Demon Makes Four Or Not Your Average Possession Movie
Or
How to put story above gory

Alright first thing I would like to get out of the way is that some other critics have been blasting this movie for giving away the
ending in the first few minutes. JUST STOP YOU DON'T GET IT, Also found Footage is my favorite sub genre.Thank you now on to the review

The new film Delivery: The Beast Within a found footage  piece with a twist may very well turn out to be this decade's Blair Witch with it's small cast giving big performances and a nice new twist to the way found footage is shown.

Written and directed by Brian Netto with additional writing credit going to Adam Schindler Starring Laurel Vail, Danny Barclay,
Laurel Vail and Danny Barclay
and Rob Cobuzio.

The story revolves around Vail and Barclay as Rachel and Kyle Massy a young married couple having trouble conceiving and carrying a baby. When they do get pregnant they agree to be part of a typical TLC reality program about expectant parents produces by Cobuzio's character Rick(who is the least sleazy TV person ever). In the first few acts we are treated to the happy young family doing things like every other couple that is expecting do, telling family and friends, shopping for baby things, and moving into a bigger house all through the lens of Rick crew. Just after the second month we start to see things may not be right, but is it something supernatural or just the everyday first baby jitters. As
Rob Cobuzio
the film goes on we are left hints on both sides is it a demon or is it a young mother to be that stopped her meds or maybe the TV producer looking for the next big show. And then we hear the demon has a name Alastor now that might not mean anything unless you have studied mythology but Alastor is :

Alastor in Greek mythology is known as the avenging spirit who was born the son of Neleus, King of Phylos. When Hercules approached Neleus and asked him to free him of his debt, Neleus refused and in anger Hercules killed Neleus and all his sons with the exception of Nestor. The dead Alastor became the avenging spirit. In Christian demonology Alastor is given the title chief executioner. He is sometimes linked to Zoroastrianism where he is known as the “executioner” and a manifestation of Azazel. It’s
Alastor
however difficult to reconcile his Greek origins with Persian Zoroastrianism and Judaic Azazel. Alastor is a disciple of Nemesis the god of vengeance and retribution. He is described as a handsome male entity that nurtures feuds and fuels discords. In Greek and Roman mythology he is commonly known as the evil genius who promotes divisions between families and who has at his disposal charm, guile, wit and ruthlessness.

And now that you know that we can look at the movie with a whole new light. It all starts to make sense as the demon does just enough to make us think well maybe shes just going crazy and everything can be explained away. There are so many subtle things they do to draw you in without going over the top. Like the neighborhood dogs going crazy the night of the birth or Rachel's manikin moving around the house, the house being vandalized and such. I kept waiting for jump scares and when they didn't come where I was expecting them to the filmmakers drew me into their world deeper until I was totally immersed with the characters waiting to see if this was a possession or a crazy lady. I don't see the comparisons with Rosemary's Baby as this movie isn't about a spirit or devil possession or impregnating Rachel. Alastor doesn't want the baby he wants to torment the parents and that is truly the key in my opinion, did her father death have any reason why she was choosing or just luck of the pregnancy draw  we may never know. But what I do know is "Delivery: The Beast Within" is going on my "Best of" list for this year and my "all Time Best Found Footage" list. Do yourself a favor head over and check this movie out. It's a fine work by young hungry filmmakers that going against the grain let your mind scare you and not the sight of severed limb dripping blood scare you.

'AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW' News

KILLER CONFIRMED FOR 'AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW'

One of the highlights throughout all three of the previous 'American Horror Story' seasons has got to be the inclusion of a mystery maniac. We've already been introduced to Rubber Man, Bloody Face and the Axe Man respectively throughout each season to date and according to creator Ryan Murphy 'American Horror Story: Freak Show' will be no different. During an interview with EW Murphy was describing the tone of the next season as "quite terrifyingly dark." He continued..."if you have a character named the Clown Killer, it’s going to be dark." So there you have it "The most terrifying clown ever!" The fourth season stars Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Jamie Brewer, Denis O'Hare, Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, Evan Peters and newcomer Michael Chiklis ('Fantastic Four') and will be set in a 1950's freak show based in Florida. 'American Horror Story: Freak Show' begins this October.

Munger Road (2011)

Munger Road: Don't Leave Me Hanging Bro.......

6 Out Of 10

Let me get some things out of the way about this movie before I channel Dennis Miller and go off on a rant. I thought first time writer/director Nicholas Smith did a fine job, with good storytelling and well directed scenes. The film also boast above par acting for a low budget horror movie. Starring Randall Batinkoff and Bruce Davison who have over 70 years of talent between them and it came across on screen. The four leads played by Trevor Morgan, Brooke Peoples, Hallock Beals, and Lauren Storm all put in tight and believable performance's. Now the only really glaring plot hole was the age of the killer, the sheriff (Davison)was giving the background of the case to his deputy(Batinkoff) and the numbers would have put the killers age at about 70 give or take a few years. But that can be forgiving. The story borrows from the greats in the genre including The Blair Witch and Halloween to name a couple, and actually pulls it off.

****May Contain Spoilers****

The movie tells two separate intertwined stories till the final act when they merge. One being the hunt for an escaped serial killer and the other a supernatural tale of group of teens trying to find a urban legend. The thriller storyline is pretty straight forward killer breaks out, kills guards, carjacks a van to get home. with a nice little red herring thrown in to keep us guessing. The horror storyline is much the same cookie cutter supernatural killer fare we get all the time. Teens check out something scary, car breaks, cell phones lose signal, and one by one they go off alone. On a side note it was refreshing to see them not hate each other like you see in so many of these types of movies. What makes this movie special is the way they work the two storylines together. This is truly a case of the whole being greater than it's parts. Either part of the movie would have been mediocre at best but fit nicely together. Thought out the movie we are lead to believe that the serial killer is the one terrorizing the kids at his old killing ground. Not until the end of the movie do we find out that he was killed at 11:14 pm the night before the exact time the teens watches stopped working and the strange things started happen to them a disembodied hand leaving a print on the window. A flash in the camera of someone behind their car. Strange sounds all around them. Easy enough then right find what's keeping him here fix it and send him into the light. The End turn up the lights time to head out. Not so fast............

Now I don't want to get off on a rant here but the movie ends on a To Be Continued screen yep thats right nothing settled don't know who lived or died don't know why he came back. Nothing zip, zilch, not even a sorry. Now that premiss wouldn't be bad if and it's a big if. If Munger Road II was in the can....wait for it.....it's not and the latest news is it ain't coming. So instead of wrapping up the loose ends and if people like it then writing the sequel We'll just force a sequel and I can take it easy on the screenplay. The whole thing is ludicrous hell I sat through all the credits thinking it was a out of place joke. The movie was 86 minutes long even an extra 14 minutes you could have cleaned it up and a real good movie(I bet it could have been done in 10). But the audience was short changed and it was a bad move and you should feel bad for doing it. If you can't get it together for part II at least go shoot the end for the first one and call it an extended directors cut. All in all decent movie that you get short changed in the end.

A Note To Horror Movie Producers......

An Open Letter To Horror Movie Producers

To Whom It May Concern,

Thank You so much for all the great things you all do to make us jump and leave a light on at night while we sleep. However for the love Bella Lugosi's ghost and Bud's decaying body, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop with the "making movies counting on a sequel" nonsense. One of the major complaints I hear about horror movies today is "good movie but the ending kinda sucked though". Let that sink in you had the audience right where you wanted them only to let them slip away in the final act. Don't misinterpret this as me hating on squeals there are plenty of movie series that the second or third movie is way better than the original. But let the quality of your craft dictate what gets remade. I do understand the draw of playing for a sequel has but in doing so you short change yourself and us. This especially true of inde movies we do understand the hardships you have went though to see your vision come to life. But letting the production team take the cheap and easy way out won't help anyone. For me as I'm watching a movie that starts to play for squeal I start to feel cheated by the movie I'm watching. And it is true that horror fans will watch any horror movie that is made but don't take our love for a gerne for weakness. There are plenty of movies that beg for more of the story to be told and those will rise up above the ones that are playing they're audience for a fool. I believe it also lets your writer's and director's an easy out, your job is to challenge them not just let them go through the motions in hopes of getting an easy paycheck in the II version. We as an audience especially in horror are probably the smartest of movie goer's. Don't sacrifice what you have worked so hard to get made by hoping that you can make another, if it's good you will. Again Thank You making our nightmares real, but don't turn our nightmares into movie nightmares.

Yours Truly,

Kids And Horror

When was your first horror movie you remember watching. For me it was Night Of The Living Dead, I remember being with my parents at the Gratiot Drive-In when I was 4 and on that night an obsession was born.

Truthfully I don't remember to much of that night. But I do remember being there. And that brings us to what I wanted to talk about today. How old is to young to introduce your child to horror movies. For me I think at about 5 or 6 is old enough to start watching some of the scarier films now I'm not talking about letting them watch Saw or Hostel but some of the milder movies. Because let's be honest most of the Xbox generation won't find the classic movie monsters appealing. Each parent needs to make this decision on their own. I base my decision on swearing and nudity/sex, a little swearing is fine my 9 year old knows what "bad words" are and a few GD's and hells aren't going to turn him into Jason I do draw the line at the the big one the "F" word one or two maybe fine but really do we need to hear it every other sentence don't get me wrong I can cuss like a drunken sailor mated with a outlaw biker. As for nudity I just don't feel comfortable watch softcore snuff with my kids even the adult ones. While nudity is always a deal breaker, There are a few exceptions to the swearing rule if I feel the movie is important to the genre or subgenre. A case in point would be Shaun of the Dead I felt it was such a defining moment in Zombie movies that the positives outweighed the negatives . What's your opinion on this I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Haunter (2013)

A Family Friendly Ghost Movie That Isn't Casper

6/10 Stars

Rated NR for no particular reason

Well one things for sure the spirit of old Nickelodeon shows Are You Afraid Of The Dark and Goosebumps are alive and well in this movie . And thats not a bad thing, finding a family friendly horror movie today is like finding a ten dollar bill in the jacket you haven't worn in a year. While I believe the the writers started out with a good concept, they let so many other films influence them it took away from the what could have been a very good movie. The movie is certainly is carried by the two leads Abigail Breslin and Stephen McHattie. Directed by my home town boy Vincenzo Natali known for 1997's Cube among others. I get what he was trying to do he just took to long to get there.  Running at 97 minutes it seemed it could have been trimmed down to 80 and would have told a better story.

****May Contain Spoilers****

The Good:
Great concept a view through the eyes of the ghost.
The acting lead by Abigail Breslin and Stephen McHattie.
Family friendly, no nudity/sex and very little mild swearing.
A lower budget film that doesn't let it stop it

The Bad:
   The "Groundhog Day" opening act
Pale Man's batcave like labyrinth. Really was this house built on an abandoned mine?
Runtime about 15 minutes or so too long.

We start the film meeting a family that includes Mom and Dad little brother Robbie and teenager Lisa we are also introduced to Robbies imaginary friend Edgar that is living the same day in 1985(the day before Lisa's 16th birthday) over and over again. Daughter Lisa comes to realize this but can't get her family to understand. So we get to watch the same shots over and over again till we are almost sick of it. Lisa starts to hear voices coming from different parts of the house and we get follow along while she investigates. We learn that her family is actually dead and living in some kind of limbo that seems to be controlled by the "pale man". Thier home is surrounded by a fog that no matter how hard you try to leave you end up back at the house. Lisa starts communicating with a present day teenageer Olivia and taking posession of her at times. Though notes and signs left for one another Lisa finds that the pale man is actually a serial killer that lived in the house. Killing young girls for about 20 years before dieing there. After which he had taken possession of Lisa and Robbie's father and killed her family. Now he has taken control of Olivia's dad with plans to do it all again. Though the girls investigation we met the ghost of Frances Nichols one of the first victims of the pale man. As the film goes into the "chase" we find out that the reason they can communicate is if you hold something that belongs to the departed you can connect with them. The ghost can also become self-aware when this is done. As the chase between Lisa trying to save Oliva's family and free her own family from this limbo it is learned that Edgar is actually the pale man who started down his killing road by dispatching his own family.  Lisa's family after being helped by Oliva and Lisa "wake up" and are allowed to leave the house and go into the light. Lisa stays behind to save the current residence of her old home. After finding the killers lair earlier when we met Frances, Lisa returns and gathers up all of his trophy's so she can call on the victims to help her. After confronting the pale man dispatching him with the help of his victims and saving Olivia's family, Lisa is reunited with her family on her 16th birthday and the fog is lifted presumably in haven.

Might As Well Start At The Begining

As I sat here staring at my monitor wondering what would be our first true blog post should we talk about a 5 star film the new Salem tv show maybe a truly creepypasta or just a fun campy Indie movie. and then it hits me like a jump scare lets start off where it all began. In 1896 a short 3 min silent film was made by Georges Méliès  Le Manoir du diable or as it was released in the U.S. The Haunted Castle.
Lets take a look.....

Isn't that GREAT. It has everything you could ever want in the genre. We got the Devil, Ghost, and Vampires. Now I'm sure someone out there will bring up Edison's 1895 short The Execution of Mary Stuart but I consider this more of a historical film then a true horror film and at only 17 seconds it a really short short. Well there you have it the root of our family horror tree.
